Ontario Protecting the Health and Safety of Paramedics

February 28, 2023

Paramedics are heroes who face unique health and safety risks while transporting and caring for patients including violence, exposure to harmful chemicals and traumatic events.

These risks are separate and distinct from those of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who typically don’t engage with patients outside of their hospital, facility or office.

That is why, this government is recognizing the heroic work that paramedics do by establishing a Paramedics Services Committee under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

With support of labour leaders from across the province, the government is protecting workers and working across the health and safety system to support and foster safe workplaces.

The Paramedics Section 21 Advisory Committee complements the existing first responder committees for fire and police services. Paramedics are on the frontlines and sometimes respond to calls in place of firefighters and police.
