In 2019, the Ontario government doubled the number of free fishing events by introducing free fishing on the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day weekends.
Fishing is a family-friendly activity that is easy to learn and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities on thousands of lakes and rivers in Ontario.
Free Family Fishing events occur four times a year:
- Family Day weekend in February
- Family Fishing Week June 29 to July 7.
Several sport fish are open to fish this weekend across the province, including trout and salmon, and several types of panfish. Refer to local regulations for specific information about fish species in season.
Canadians participating in these free fishing periods must follow conservation license catch and size limits, sanctuaries, and other fishing rules.
