Ontario Lowering Minimum Age to be a Lifeguard

To help communities to address staffing shortages and make sure pools and beaches across the province can be enjoyed safely, our government is lowering the minimum age requirement to be a lifeguard and swim instructor from 16 to 15 years of age.

This change comes into effect today and aligns with the recently updated age requirements established by National Lifesaving Society’s certification course.

By lowering the age for youth to become lifeguards, communities will have better access to more lifeguards and allow operators to maintain and expand their hours of operation.
