Ontario Launches New Fund to Build Skilled Trades Training Centres

Ontario is facing the largest labour shortage in a generation, and our government is on a mission to help workers train for the well-paying jobs we know are available.

That is why our government is investing $224 million in a new Capital Stream of the Skills Development Fund to support innovative training projects focused on building and modernizing the infrastructure Ontario needs to train workers to fill in-demand jobs and lead purpose-driven careers.

Launching on June 30, the new SDF Capital Stream will help eligible training providers, including unions, to renovate, retrofit, repair, and expand existing training centres or construct new training facilities.

Applications will be accepted until September 25, 2023 at https://www.ontario.ca/page/skills-development-fund-capital-stream.

The new fund is projected to help train more than 1,000,000 workers now and into the future.

In addition, our government is investing $535,000 to support two training projects to help 1,350 people prepare for well-paying careers as boilermakers.

Led by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 128, the first project will provide 150 jobseekers with lodging, travel and food costs as they explore introductory training needed to become boilermaker apprentices and earn bigger paycheques for themselves and their families.

The second will give 1,200 students in Northern Ontario hands-on experience with the boilermakers including welding, cutting, and rigging activities, so they can explore a life-changing career in the skilled trades.

Those interested in the boilermaker programs can learn more or apply directly at info@ibblocal128.org.
