NEWMARKET — As part of its plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, the Ontario government is protecting firefighters in Newmarket by investing $77,904.45 through the Fire Protection Grant. The funding will help municipal fire departments expand cancer prevention initiatives and improve emergency response to lithium-ion battery related incidents.
Central York Fire Services will use grant funds will be used to purchase: a decon washer and extractor, Gear Guarrd 4 detergent, and 35 storage bags for contaminated PPE.
The Fire Protection Grant supports eligible projects including:

“Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our community, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they have the tools and protections they need to do their jobs safely,” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP for Newmarket—Aurora. “Access to modern decontamination equipment and safer PPE storage will help reduce long-term health risks for firefighters and ensure they can continue serving Newmarket—Aurora with confidence and care.”
“Firefighters are always there when we need them, running towards danger to protect our homes and our communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “That is why we’re doubling this year’s Fire Protection Grant, giving even more firefighters across the province the tools they need to stay safe and effectively respond to life threatening emergencies.”
This provincial funding is a meaningful investment in the health and safety of our firefighters. The ability to enhance our personal protective equipment and expand our cancer prevention initiatives will help reduce occupation exposure risks and ensure all Central York Fire Service members have the protection they deserve while serving our communities.
