Ontario Investing in Small, Rural and Northern Communities

Funding will support economic growth and job creation in Newmarket

Newmarket— The Ontario government is providing $4,426,616 to help renew and rehabilitate local infrastructure in Newmarket. The funding is being delivered through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) and is part of the government’s overall investment of $400 million in 2023.

“I am proud of our government’s investment to support the critical infrastructure projects in the Town of Newmarket,” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy MPP for Newmarket – Aurora. “This funding will support the economic growth and job creation; ensuring that the town of Newmarket can continue to maintain and upgrade our local roads, watermains and stormwater management ponds to better serve out local residents as our community continues to develop and grow.”

OCIF provides funding to eligible communities every year to help them address critical infrastructure needs, including road, bridge, water, and wastewater projects.

“I am extremely pleased with the Province of Ontario’s announcement that the Town of Newmarket will be receiving $4.4 million from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF),” says Mayor John Taylor. “In the past, OCIF funds have helped the Town advance critical infrastructure projects like the reconstruction of Lorne Avenue, replacement of watermains, and maintenance of storm-water management ponds in our parks. These projects wouldn’t have been possible without support from other levels of government and will allow us to continue to provide safe and reliable services to our residents, businesses, and our growing community.”

“Ontario’s small, rural and northern communities, like Newmarket are essential to the growth and prosperity of the province,” said Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure. “Our government is continuing to provide stable funding to meet local infrastructure needs and provide support in response to pressures from inflation. By supporting key community infrastructure projects, we are helping to grow and build safer, more resilient communities for generations to come.”

In December 2021, the Ontario government announced an additional $1 billion for critical infrastructure projects that support economic growth and job creation in small, rural and northern communities, bringing the government’s total investment to nearly $2 billion dollars over five years.
