Ontario Helping People on Social Assistance Find Good Jobs

September 22, 2022

Ontario is facing the largest labour shortage in a generation with nearly 400,000 jobs going unfilled.

Yet, we have over 800,000 people on social assistance, many who are eager to work but are being left behind by our current system.

The status quo – where only 1% of people on social assistance find work each year – isn’t working. To build a stronger province for everyone we need all hands on deck.

That is why the government is making it easier for jobseekers, especially those on social assistance, to get the training they need to find better jobs and earn bigger paycheques to support themselves and their families.

This new customer service approach, which integrates Ontario Works Employment Assistance and the Ontario Disability Support Program – Employment Supports program into Employment Ontario, creating a one-stop service that’s easy to use.

Initial results show the new system has already helped 17,200 people, including 5,700 people receiving social assistance, secure employment in Peel, Hamilton-Niagara, and Muskoka-Kawartha.

Services for here in York, as well as Halton, Stratford-Bruce Peninsula, and Kingston-Pembroke will all be underway by Fall 2022.
