Ontario Building First Urban Provincial Park
This government is protecting natural areas, promoting the importance of healthy, green spaces and increasing sustainable outdoor recreational opportunities for future generations to use and enjoy.
To protect southern Ontario’s green spaces, the Ontario government is creating the province’s first urban provincial park, in the Township of Uxbridge.
This proposed urban provincial park in the Oak Ridges Moraine may include provincially owned properties, totaling up to 532 hectares (1,315 acres) – about 50 per cent bigger than Central Park.
The province is also partnering with the Township of Uxbridge, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Nature Conservancy of Canada to identify the full recreational and protection potential of an urban provincial park in this area.
Over the coming months, the government will be conducting site assessments and evaluations to measure the feasibility of creating an urban provincial park in Uxbridge. These assessments will involve consultation with Indigenous communities, the public, local stakeholders, partners and environmental organizations, that will help inform the government’s final decision.
