Improving Rail Safety

Improving Rail Safety

This government takes the safety of the travelling public on our rail transportation network very seriously.

To ensure our railways are safe for everyone, we are actively working to enhance oversight of the province’s rail safety regime.

In collaboration with Metrolinx, this work is already well underway, including, completing an initial review of the province’s current rail safety framework, exploring approaches to strengthen and enhance provincial rail oversight and continuing to work with Metrolinx and municipalities to ensure safety through public education and awareness campaigns.

On behalf of this government, Metrolinx, has also conducted assessments of provincially owned railways and made a number of safety enhancements, including ensuring all public grade crossings have vehicular and pedestrian gates with flashing lights and bells, pathway lights to guide pedestrians and anti-trespass mats to deter trespassers.

As part of this government’s ongoing work, we will continue to work closely with our partners, including Metrolinx and the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission, as well as the federal government and its agencies to ensure the continued safety of provincially regulated railways.
