$200,000 OTF Grant from the Ontario Government helps the Social Enterprise for Canada to Move Forward

Newmarket, ON – On Friday, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy stopped by to meet with representatives from the Social Enterprise for Canada (SEC). It was a great opportunity for SEC to update MPP Gallagher Murphy on the impact that their two-year, $200,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is having since receiving it last spring. The grant is helping SEC to provide coaching and training opportunities to strengthen leadership, and for the group to improve its cyber security.

“Our government’s investment in Social Enterprise for Canada will have a lasting and positive impact on improving community services,” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP for Newmarket—Aurora. “With refined leadership skills and strengthened cyber security, SEC is well positioned to offer enhanced programs to families, children, and newcomers.”

The OTF grant has enabled SEC to invest in its leadership formation—both individually for each member of its management and as a team. The grant also enabled SEC to invest in collaborative tools in its head office that enable more engaged virtual meetings buy purchasing and installing new IT, software and tech equipment, as well as providing training for staff on cyber security. In addition, the grant is helping with some key administrative costs, like rent.

SEC is profoundly grateful to the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for its support of retooling its leadership team after its CEO of 30 years retired and staff navigated the unknown terrain of service delivery in a post-pandemic environment.

Social Enterprise for Canada (SEC) is a people-centered, agile, and innovatively responsive not-for-profit Ontario corporation with charitable status serving York Region, Simcoe and surrounding areas. It focuses on identifying and implementing innovative and collaborative solutions to pressing issues in order to contribute toward forging a society in which everyone belongs and is empowered to contribute. SEC’s programs focus on families, children, and newcomers, serving over 95,000 clients annually through programs such as Foreign Credential Recognition Services, Supervised Access, Welcome Centre Immigrant Services-Newmarket, EarlyOn Child & Family Centres and several Before & After School and Licensed Childcare Programs.

“Whether it’s helping people learn new things, connect with their community, or simply have fun, organizations like the Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Bay and District deliver experiences that make a difference,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “That’s why grant support through the Ontario Trillium Foundation is so important. This funding will help ensure that it remains at the heart of the community for decades to come.”

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Ontario government with a mission to build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Last year, OTF invested more than $110M into 1,044 community projects and multi-sector partnerships. Projects aim to enhance economic well-being, foster more active lifestyles, support child and youth development, provide spaces for people to come together and connect, and create a more sustainable environment.
